PERSONAL CARE AND GENERAL HEALTHCARE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES PROVIDED BY MEDICAID

 

The Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) provides payment for receipt of documented long-term care facility services that are determined essential based on the attending physician's s orders and the medical and/or social needs of the resident.

 

All long-term care facilities participating in the Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) are required to provide the following services at no additional charge as they are recognized costs under the cost related reimbursement system.

The following is the list of supplies and services included in the Public Aid rate', residents and families should expect these to be supplied when necessary and appropriate:

Emesis basins - a small bowl used for collection when vomiting, coughing up mucus from lungs or throat

Emollients - substances used topically to soothe, soften or protect skin or mucus membranes and also used as vehicles for other dermatology agents

Enteral therapy equipment/supplies - equipment used when administering feedings by a tube that is either inserted through the nose and into the stomach

(nasogastric or NG feeding) or inserted through the abdominal skins and into the stomach (gastrostomy feeding)

Nebulizer - a device used for treatment of residents with breathing problems. It administers medication when breathing through a tube

Orthotics - non-custom devices to strengthen or protect a body limb or head (e.g., helmets, elastic braces, etc.)

Oximeters and oxygen analyzers - measures the amount of oxygen that is being used by the resident form a tank of oxygen

Oxygen and equipment and supplies necessary for its administration

Pads - such as sheepskin, moleskin, etc.

Petroleum - any non-water soluble lubrication used to reduce friction, for external use only (e.g., Vaseline)

Razors

Rectal tubes restraints - a type of restraint that keeps the rectal tube from coming out by normal body function or from being pulled out

Roho cushions - a cushion shaped like a donut and used by residents to sit on after rectal surgery or for those that experience hemorrhoids

Room and board, supervision and oversight

Shampoo - non-prescription

Sharps collectors - a box with a small opening that is used to properly dispose of needles and other sharp items that might be contaminated with human fluid or secretions

TENS unit and supplies - Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A non­drug method of pain relief through electrical current stimulating the nerves

Trach supplies including trach care kit - supplies needed to take care of the type of trach a resident has and in those supplies is a disposable care kit that is used to clean the trach. The kit contains normal saline, container for normal saline and brushes, etc.

All other services necessary for compliance with the requirements of the Department of Public Health as set forth in Skilled Nursing and Intermediate Care Facilities Code, Rules and Regulations (77 III. Adm. Code, Section 300, Chapter 1, Subchapter c).

Drugs and Medications

Over-the-counter drugs or items ordered by a physician. These are medications which are regularly available without a prescription at a commercial pharmacy and which may be stocked by the facility under the Department of Public Health regulations including but not limited to the following (excluding drugs and items reimbursed under the reimbursement system):

Acetaminophen - a pain reliever such as Tylenol

Aspirin - Buffered, Enteric to dissolve in the intestinal tract instead of the stomach, or coated

Bicarbonate of Soda Powders

General Multivitamins

Lozenges - to be placed in the mouth to dissolve, a way to administer some medications, e.g., Chloraseptic throat lozenges
