Real People, Real Problems, Real Solutions: Recommendations for the Illinois Long Term Care Ombudsman Program
I CAN! llinois Community Advocates Now!

The I CAN! Project, funded by the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago, was established to assist Illinois Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs in recruiting volunteers.

Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities must be assured meaningful access to advocacy services through the Illinois ombudsman program. Volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to

  • visiting residents,
  • empowering residents and their families by informing them of their rights, and
  • providing a voice for residents unable or unwilling to speak for themselves

are vital components of an effective long-term care ombudsman program. Most importantly, volunteers are members of the communities surrounding the long-term care facilities and are a link between the community and the facility residents.
